Are You “Wired To Binge?” It Doesn’t Mean You’re Broken…If you’ve ever felt out of control with food, trust me, you’re not alone.
One of the primary reasons people overeat and regain lost weight is that they have not changed the underlying behaviour that leads them to crave comfort from food.
See if any of the following resonates with you... - Constant thoughts about food (mostly shaming)
- Eating vast amounts of food without feeling satisfied
- Self-imposed restrictions on food followed by out-of-control binges
- Overwhelming urges to binge that come out of nowhere - Overeating on autopilot--once you start, you can’t stop
- Guilt, shame, and confusion around why you ate or how it happened
The patterns in the brain that control how we respond to stress are neural pathways "wired" for survival. Whether we reach for a bar of chocolate or bury ourselves in work overload, our daily response to stress are the reactivation of these "wired" pathways, that were learned and encoded years or decades before!
Traditional weight loss programmes have not focused on changing these stress responses that trigger overeating and I believe this is one reason their long term effectiveness has been so dismal.
The good news is that you do not have to be at war with yourself and your body anymore. There are new ways to retrain the brain and help people change the way they feel about food. Taking advantage of neuroplasticity we can move from dieting to rewiring the survival circuit to permanently change the way we think and feel about food.
